War Is a Racket is a 1935 book by Major General Smedley D. Butler, a two-time Medal of Honor recipient and, at the time, the most decorated Marine in U.S. history. Drawing on his 33-year military career, Butler argues that modern war is waged not for national defense but to enrich a small class of financiers, arms manufacturers, and industrialists, while the costs — in lives and money — fall on ordinary soldiers and taxpayers.

Blip: Humanity's 300 Year Self-Terminating Experiment with Industrialism by Christopher O. Clugston is a data-driven look at the future of global society. In his famous 2000 essay, "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us," Bill Joy (co-founder of Sun Microsystems) argues that our most powerful 21st-century technologies — Genetics, Nanotechnology, and Robotics (GNR) — threaten to make humanity an endangered species.
Joy's essay is about the unprecedented and existential dangers of these new tools. Unlike older technologies such as nuclear weapons, which require massive government facilities and rare materials, GNR technologies can be created using widely accessible knowledge and relatively cheap equipment. Joy focuses heavily on the threat of self-replication; self-replicating nanobots or engineered synthetic organisms could cause irreversible, catastrophic damage once released into the environment. He also warns that as computers become vastly more intelligent than humans, we risk sliding into total dependence on machines, making humanity ultimately obsolete.
His conclusion is a call for relinquishment. Joy argues that because the risks of these technologies are so vast, scientists and society must voluntarily agree to abandon the development of certain dangerous GNR pursuits. Drawing parallels to the Biological Weapons Convention, he urges the scientific community to adopt strict ethical constraints and abandon technologies that possess the power to self-replicate or strip humans of control over their own future.
